When the Thank-you and Order-status pages moved to Shopify’s new checkout in August 2025, a lot of brands lost something they never noticed: the post-purchase upsell that quietly added a few percent to every order. The page still works. The upsell often just stopped.
That is a silent AOV leak, and it is one of the easiest to plug. The post-purchase moment is the most underrated real estate on your store.
What changed on the Thank-you and Order-status page
These pages are no longer customized the old way. Post-purchase offers now run through the new checkout model and post-purchase extensions, not legacy scripts or Liquid edits. If your old upsell was built on the previous approach, it did not survive the migration, and nobody got an error to tell them so.
Why post-purchase is the easiest AOV win you have
Think about the moment. The customer has already bought. They have already trusted you with their card. There is zero risk to the original conversion, because the order is done before the offer appears. So a relevant one-click add lifts average order value without threatening the sale you just made.
No new traffic required. You are earning more from buyers you already won.
No risk to the core conversion. The first order is complete before the upsell shows.
High relevance is easy. You know exactly what they just bought, so the offer can be obvious and useful.
How to rebuild it the right way
Use a true post-purchase offer that appears after the order is placed, with one-click acceptance and no re-entry of payment details.
Make the offer relevant to the order, a refill, a complement, a bundle completion, not a random discount on something unrelated.
Keep it to one clear ask. A single, well-matched offer beats a wall of options that gets ignored.
Measure take rate and AOV, not just whether it loads. If acceptance is low, the offer is wrong, not the placement.
Done well, post-purchase is found money, and it is part of the wider work of closing every gap in the journey, which is what funnel optimization is for.
